Fourteen

I kept a wary eye on the sky.

Dark storm clouds had moved in while I slept, the kind that portended thunderstorms. Not that I minded getting wet, but I did miss my comfortable tower. In any case, I wasn’t watching the weather. I was watching for signs of ill tidings. Perhaps a glasswing carrying news of a hollowing attack, as Jinu seemed to have implied. Or perhaps the inevitable arrival of Gia. Our last encounter in Kiata’s tower hadn’t been auspicious. Had his homicidal intentions toward me lessened? Did I really want to stick around to find out?

My conversation with Jinu had left me with many questions, but also the unavoidable realization that I was running out of time to beat the rust. Jinu’s warning echoed in my mind. Had Harlan manipulated me? I did not want to believe that. I still suspected the answer to defeating the rust was back in Rolm, but I was far from certain. It was indeed possible that humans and dragons working together could be more effective against the rust. Even if we could not bring back balefire, dozens of magic users would be a potent force. Even though I did not trust Jinu, staying in Ni-Yota did have appeal for me.

Kiata was one reason to stay here. I had left her before, and she’d almost died in a griffin onslaught. Even Rinxia’s guardianship had been insufficient. Only the emergence of my sister’s magic and Legao’s uncanny savvy had preserved her—barely. It wasn’t just brotherly affection that was the source of my concern for my young sister; the attack at Trishan had proved something really was out to get her. But would Kiata really be any safer with me in Rolm, a place where dragons were enslaved?

When I looked again at the sky, I saw gladder tidings: Rinxia punching through a wall of dark clouds, returning from some flight to the west. She must’ve been awake well before the sun. I hoped she’d notice me staring upwards and come to speak with me, but she either didn’t see me or chose to pretend she didn’t see me. With a deep sigh, I surrendered my pride (to the extent I ever had any) and flew over to the patch of palace estate that she had claimed for her own.

I circled once in polite dragon fashion before landing a short distance away from Rinxia’s temporary abode, which was a tree-sheltered ditch filled with leaves that looked as if it had once been a small pond. Kiata had chosen a nearby grove as her own resting place, which irked me. It was empty. Rinxia noticed my noticing that Kiata wasn’t home.

“I see the worry in your eyes, Bayloo. You need not be concerned. She is visiting Legao. Kiata is concerned for the wizard’s health. They have become close since their ordeal together.” Somehow, Legao saving my sister stung, even though it shouldn’t have. Legao’s unexpected display of power also nagged at me. Something wasn’t quite right there, either.
