Ben and Emily are driving through the quiet, dark, south London streets. They desperately want each other. One wants to give. One wants to receive. Emily is accustomed to being wanted, Ben less so. But they both know that they need to negotiate some of their current lives, their time and energy, before they can be together in comfort. They need to figure each other out a little bit more. They are on the way to visit a homeless man who lives in a one-man tent situated on a patch of grassy, bushy wasteland behind a business park in south London. As Ben and Emily cruise along, the street lights cast ominous shadows around the interior of the very expensive Range Rover. That car is much more practical for her charity work than her favourite car, a BMW 5 Series saloon. Emilyâs an unrepentant petrol head and her driving style reflects her core personality traits; she is confident, quick, and decisive. Sheâs a good driver but in Benâs eyes she is a bit too good. Thereâs an edge to her style in the way she gives the road her one hundred per cent attention as if she is negotiating a tricky section of the racetracks of Monaco, Silverstone, or the Nürburgring. Ben doesnât trust her one hundred per cent; there is a strange look in her eyes. Sheâs a little too focussed, too aware, too distant. Ben decides to try and break her concentration:
âIs this car one of yours?â
âNo, itâs one of Tomâs,â said Emily with her eyes fixed on the road ahead.
âI figured you werenât a Range Rover girl.â Emily smiles for him. âWhat else has he got?â
âA Bentley and a Jaguar. What have you got?â
âJust the one. Itâs a Ford Focus.â
âWhat kind of Ford Focus?â
âI donât know. I donât give a toss about the boring details. I just wanted something that gets me from A to B.â
âThatâs sacrilege!â
âCar-chat bores me to death.â
âBut you can literally have as many great cars as you want.â
âI hardly use mine. I prefer using the Tube.â
âSo youâre a billionaire with an off-peak Travelcard?â
âI wouldnât go that far. Iâm still fairly anonymous in public.â
âHow are you enjoying being a fairly recent multi-billionaire?â
âIâm sort of bored.â
âWhat?â
âThe French have got a good word for it. They call it ennui. Itâs a kind of lethargy and frustration caused by boredom.â
âHa! Poor you!â
âI know. I know I should be grateful to be in this positionâ¦but Iâm not. I feel like a professional sportsman who has retired too soon. What do you do with yourself?â
âI plod along,â said Emily.
âThatâs false modesty,â said Ben.
âI hate talking about myself. Itâs so boring. Iâd rather talk about you. You probably miss the cut-and-thrust of computer game creation.â
âI do.â
âYou need a purpose in your life, and fast!â
âIâm working on it. Being around you helps. I can absorb your positive energy, your joie de vivre.â
âNo pressure, then? Is it just a kind of love caused by your boredom?â
âI donât count my chickens. Iâm wise
