Chapter 16

I’m not especially quick on my feet when I’m in a new town, super early in the morning, and looking for I don’t even know what. “I felt the need to come here. I’m not sure why. My intuition, I guess…”

He wasn’t sure he bought my explanation. Het held his tongue before shooting off the first thing out of his mouth. I think. Though, it didn’t take long for his true personality to shine through. The insinuation in his tone didn’t do him any favors. “Don’t tell me you’re one of those manifestation junkies. All mindset and no solid, hard data? Oh, please.”

My blood boiled. I snarled at him. “First off, that’s extremely offensive to those who trust their instincts or believe strongly in manifesting good things in their lives. Secondly, no, it has nothing to do with that. I’m a witch, and I was sent here.”

“A witch? Did you just say you’re a witch?” He took a step back and cocked his head to the side, almost like he was evaluating me for the first time.

I groaned. Come on, he worked with June. He had to know—oh, boy. She kept a low profile, so low, it could be buried six feet under. My words spilled out so quickly, I didn’t have time to reel them back in. The glint in his eye told me he didn’t know. At all.

The queasiness hit me first. I slid my hand over my stomach and closed my eyes. Deep breath. Breathe, girl. Yes, June is going to be beyond angry, but push that aside for the moment. You’re here for a reason.

He repeated the words, quieter. “You’re a witch?”

I snapped back at him. “And you’re a scientist.”

“Yes, I am.”

“Tell me, Mr. Scientist, do people like you believe in witches?”

He didn’t answer. “Why did you feel the need to come here?”

This was not a conversation I looked forward to. “You obviously heard about the murder that took place—John Farmer. It was all over the news. I guess I wondered if it could have happened elsewhere, but the body was moved. I don’t know. It’s silly, or maybe I was hoping to find something to point me in the right direction.”

“Like what? Why?”

“I’m trying to help a friend. That’s enough of twenty questions, okay. Turns out I made a mistake. I need to head back to my café. Let’s pretend you didn’t see me. We don’t need to talk or be friends. Just do me a favor, don’t mention this to June. She’s sensitive about this kind of stuff. Can you at least do that?”

He hesitated, then nodded. “Is she—?

I looked away. “It’s not my place to talk about. Why? Are the two of you—”

“Whoa, work colleagues. We’re not like that.”

“Okay, well have the courtesy to keep this knowledge out of her workplace. She prefers it that way.”

“Obviously.”

I was in deep trouble with June. That I knew for sure. What I still didn’t know was why I’d been sent to Otter Lake in the first place.
