Only one guest house served the tiny community of Broitzem and it was next door to the Fischer Brauhaus, which Christian assured them served very good food. He and Justin waited outside in the trap while Simon went in to find out if there were rooms available. The landlady of the guest house was a timid-looking woman called Frau Edelmann. She was plump and very short, barely reaching Simon’s chest. She spoke slow and deliberate German, as if reading her responses to his questions from a script. Frau Edelmann was reluctant to discuss business with Simon and wanted to wait until her husband came down from the roof where he was repairing broken tiles. With much persuasion she revealed that there was one room available and that Simon must pay for it in full in advance. The guest house did have a bathroom and Frau Edelmann assured Simon it would not take long for the hot water boiler to heat up.

Simon went back outside to tell Justin the good news.

“Capital.” Justin jumped down from the pony and trap and stretched his legs. “I’m looking forward to a decent bath.”

“Me too,” Simon replied. He smiled. “I’m afraid we’re going to have to share a room.”

“That’s not a problem,” Justin said. “It will be like the old days at Oxford”.

“That’s the other slight problem.” Simon began to walk back to the guest house. “There’s only one bed.”
