Chapter 11
After talking with Marla yesterday, she was exhausted. All she wanted was one shred of good news. If Marc showed up and told her the killer was caught, sheâd ask him to marry her on the spot. But since she didnât believe for one second that there was a snowballâs chance in hell of that happening, she would settle for a cup of coffee.
âCoffee. Iâm begging you. Please give me a caffeine transfusion,â Harper said as she walked up to the counter at Bouncing Beans the next morning.
âRough night?â Libby asked, already moving to make a latte for Harper.
âJustâ¦â Harper said, waving her hand around as she tried to come up with words. âEverything. Marla and I had an interesting talk yesterday and now Iâm even more confused. And concerned. Marla was acting weird.â
âLike she was guilty?â Libby asked quietly.
âNo. More like she was scared history was repeating itself.â
âIs she still a suspect?â
âI have no idea. I really just want Marc to show up and say heâs figured it all out, but thatâs not likely to happen.â
âHence the need for coffee,â Libby said and smiled as she set the latte down in front of Harper. âDonât worry. Iâve got you covered.â
âYouâre the best. How could I possibly live without you?â
âYou couldnât,â Libby said, smiling mischievously now.
Harper laughed and waved as she headed out the door with her coffee in hand. Today, she would simply focus on the work in front of her. The best thing she could do was sequester herself in the library and forget all about murder and competitions.
There was plenty to do at the library. First, she had to check the book return and donation boxes. Then she had to double-check the inventory for the end-of-the-reading-program party that would be at the end of the month. Then she had to create and print out the flyers for the party. And that was just the beginning of the day.
Basically, she would have plenty to distract her from the murder.
When she finished opening up the library, Harper didnât waste any time. If she let herself be idle then her mind would wander right back to the murder and the competition. For a few hours at least, she wanted a break from it all.
Diving right into her work, Harper soon found a rhythm that kept her hands and mind busyâand far away from all things related to murder. When she was halfway through, Reb interrupted her with a knock on her desk.
âThereâs a handsome man waiting for you outside,â Reb said, wiggling her eyebrows as she did a little dance and winked at Harper.
âA man? Who?â
âWhy donât you go out there and see for yourself?â
Sighing, Harper stood up and went to the front, smiling slightly when she saw Marc standing outside in the courtyard waiting for her.
âI was told there was a handsome man waiting here for me. Did you see him leave?â she teased as she walked up to him.
Marc froze and then narrowed his eyes at her. âWhat are you implying, Miss Lansbury?â
âNothing at all, Detective.
