Chapter 14

Vincent finally wrote me back. Although the response was what I had hoped for, I was a bit taken aback by what he said. Basically, he apologized for his part in our breakup and said he still wanted us to get married. Now, here’s the kicker: he wanted us to get married in March, which was only three months away! He wrote something about not wanting to waste any more time.

I guessed I could understand that, but going from Isis Reynolds to Isis Lewis in three months wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. I wanted to get married in about a year or so, after we’d had a chance to date. This was happening way too fast.

Unfortunately, I didn’t stand my ground. I was so overtaken by love and excitement that I accepted Vincent’s proposal. I wrote him back as soon as I finished reading the letter Saturday afternoon and immediately began planning my dream wedding, complete with the white dress, unity candle, and the broom we’d jump over after our nuptials. Needless to say, I was overjoyed. I was getting my man back! But most of all, I would be putting an end to my streak of getting engaged but never married.

I was so excited that I ran over to Kendra’s apartment to show her Vincent’s letter. She was the only person around besides Cleo who had been with me through this entire roller coaster, and I couldn’t wait to share the good news with her. I think I might have run across the parking lot faster than I had ever run before. When I reached her door, I banged madly, only to be answered with silence.

“Come on, Kendra. I know you’re here,” I mumbled when I saw that her car was in her normal space. I knocked again, then decided to turn the knob. I figured she might be sleeping.

Damn, how I wish my guess had been right.

Instead of finding Kendra curled up on the sofa, sleeping, I found her lying, with her legs in the air, as that Nina chick emerged from between them. You woulda thought I was Fred Sanford the way I dropped Vincent’s letter and clutched my heart!

“Oh, my God,” I shouted, turning my head and holding on to the door frame for support.

“Oh, my God,” Kendra repeated, bringing her hand to her head in obvious embarrassment. “Nina, you told me you locked the door!”

Nina shrugged, with a satisfied look on her face. She obviously harbored no embarrassment whatsoever. “I thought I did,” she said, sitting back down on the floor.

“I’m sorry,” I said quickly as I rushed from my girl’s apartment. If you ever wanted to see a black woman turn red, picture me after seeing my best friend having sex with another woman. I felt a mixture of guilt for breaking in on them, embarrassment for seeing what I saw, and disappointment because the possibility had finally been confirmed. Kendra was gay!

When I reached my apartment, I went straight to my bedroom.
