Chapter thirty-three

Airi

Airi sat up in bed.

Naima squeaked, her hands flapping where she sat next to Airi. “I’m so glad you’re awake, My Lady.”

Airi narrowed her brows, while drawing her blanket up to hide her thin shift. Outside the window, a morning sun sat on the horizon. “I’ve slept later before.”

The older woman crossed her hands over her bosom. “You’ve slept for a full three nights.”

Three nights?

That meant it was her Name Day. Her thoughts felt jumbled. In a daze, she allowed Naima to help her into her usual suitable gown and ate the fruit placed in her hand. “Has… has the king…”

She keenly felt the blush on her cheeks.

Naima pulled a brush through her hair. “He never left your side.”

Except he wasn’t here now.

Her heart twitched painfully in her chest.

“Where does he go during the day, Naima?”

The older woman looked torn. No one wanted to tell her the full truth of what was happening. She understood Naima’s loyalty, but she hated never knowing what was happening around her.

She pulled away from her lady-in-waiting and left the chamber, intent on helping wherever she could with all those coming to the castle to seek shelter. But when she reached the main hall, it was mostly empty compared to when she’d last been here. Less than a dozen pallets remained. Half of those still held sleeping children, while the other half were awake and eating at the tables.

Seeing the children tugged on her heart, and she sorely missed Briallen, her sister with her dreaming soul and a brilliant smile. She caught sight of the magical mirror, wishing she could use it to see Briallen again.

Perhaps Kalden owned another magical mirror she could see her sister in? That is, if he would talk to her.

Without thinking, she moved toward the front doors.

“My Lady?”

The voice cracked, and she smiled as she turned to Eddie. She’d last spoken to him three days before. Three days? The concept was strange. She’d gone to sleep one night and missed life as it continued without her.

And the hollow feeling in her middle hadn’t subsided. Maybe she was getting sick?

“It’s nice to see you again, My Lady.” He smiled.

She wanted to run a brush through his unruly hair but clicked her tongue to calm her fingers. “It’s nice to see you, too.”

He shifted on his feet, his hands going behind his back and his eyes dropping to the ground. “I was worried about you.”

Her eyebrows climbed. She didn’t know how to respond to that, but his concern warmed her heart. She didn’t want to see him so concerned, though. “Weren’t you going to tell me about the castle’s secrets?”

Secrets. Parts of her dreams filtered through the haze of her mind. If she wanted answers, she needed to know about all the secrets. Didn’t Lutine say something about a tower?

No matter how hard she tried to remember, the specifics eluded her.

He angled his head toward the hall that led into Kalden’s tower on the opposite side of hers. “That’s the Summer Tower.
