Iwoke and groaned. Every bit of me was sore and achy. It took a moment to realize the aches made sense, given that Iâd jumped from a moving vehicle yesterdayâI presumed it was yesterday given the morning light I could see through my closed eyelids.
My lids flew open. I wasnât in my bedroom. I wasnât in the storage room at Conorâs shop. I sat up and looked around.
âGood morning,â Conor said. âHow are you feeling?â
I stared at him. What was I doing in his bed with him beside me?
My thought process must have been obvious because he said, âI donât have a couch. Only a loveseat and two chairs. I tried sleeping in each, but it was impossible. I hope you don't mind.â
I was fully clothed. He was fully clothed. I didnât think anything untoward had happened in the night. His bed was a lot more comfortable than the lumpy couch in the back of the store. So, okay.
âThank you for taking care of me.â
He nodded acknowledgment.
âI had the strangest dream,â I said. âYou were in it. You were doing some hand-wavy magic, I think, and chanting something.â
He sat up next to me. âNot a dream.â
âWhat?â
âYou were hurt more badly than you thought,â he said. âMore than Iâd thought at first. I came back from locking the shopâs front door and found you not breathing. No heartbeat that I could detect. I tried CPR, but you were gone.â
I stared at him. âI was dead?â
âI donât know for sure. Maybe you were in a coma. Maybe your body shut down most of its functions so that all your energy could be used for healing.â
I crossed my arms over my chest in a protective self-hug. âYou did something, didnât you?â
He nodded. âA soul-weave. I gave you a tiny piece of my soul to power your body. To bring you back.â
I stared at him, dumbfounded. Finally, I managed, âWhat?â
âJust what I said,â he replied.
âSo, a piece of your soul is now in me?â
âYes.â
âHow is that possible?â
He smiled wanly and shrugged. âMagic.â
Nerves fluttered up my breastbone. âNecromancy? If I was deadââ
âIâm no necromancer,â he said. âYou werenât all the way dead, or the soul-weave wouldnât have worked.â
I blinked, then blinked again.
âItâs a lot to take in,â I muttered. I focused my gaze on him. âWhat, exactly, does it mean that I now have a piece of your soul in me? Whatâs different?â
He sat up, tossed off the cover heâd slept under, and stood.
I thought about standing, too, but didnât have the energy. Did this âsoul-weaveâ have consequences so awful that he had to stand away from me to explain it? Did he think Iâd attack him when I learned the truth? If it was really bad, maybe I would.
âThe most obvious change is that weâre now tied together. For life.â
I stared at him. I had questions. So many questions. âUh. Tied together? How?â
He turned his hands palms up. âIâve never done a soul-weave before. I only know what I was told when I was taught how to do it.
