Chapter 25

“I will do anything to keep Rosie safe. Anything.”—Violet Smith, Frequent Murderer

Violet pulled herself through the broken window pane, landing in a crouch on the small window seat in her grandparents’ bedroom, knife hand up and extended in front of her. A willowy figure lay on the large bed, her long hair spread out behind her in a wave of silk. Her chest rose and fell unevenly, and a knife protruded from her stomach, its hilt wrapped in leather.

Violet snapped another quick glance back at the bed, relief flooding through her. Her skin wasn’t gold and her hair was orange, not rose red.

Not Rosie.

Thank the gods.

A stranger stood next to the door, wearing a brown tunic over tan pants, the embroidered crest on his chest uncomfortably familiar. A wound scored his face from eyebrow to chin, sticky purple blood dripping down his cheek. A Sídhe-Incubus halfbreed, from the color of the blood. She hadn’t thought Lightsword had any of those in his service. But then, she hadn’t thought the baron was an Incubus, either.

Violet caught a flare of panic in his eyes before he whirled toward the door with the grace of a dancer. The fae had clearly decided that escape was preferable.

I don’t think so.

Violated launched herself at him, covering the small distance with ease. Her momentum pushed him into the door, shutting it with a bang. Then she spun him around, her fist slamming into his injured cheek. He howled in pain as the bone shattered. She swept his feet out, and he landed on his back, gasping as the air exploded from his lungs.

“When did the baron send you here?” Violet crouched down and pressed one of her dirks to his throat.

He didn’t answer.

Cold calm swept over her. No one invaded her home. No one came after her family. She nicked his skin, pressed down against his carotid artery. “When were you sent? What were your orders?”

More silence. More blood.

“This blade isn’t for show. I will kill you.” With her other hand, she slammed her second dirk into his shoulder.

His scream was high-pitched and agonized.

“There’s iron in this. Did I forget to mention that?”

Sweat beaded on the intruder’s forehead.

“I can keep stabbing you. We can find out if you die first from iron poisoning or from blood loss. It’s up to you.”

Rustling from the figure on the bed, then a voice as soft as falling leaves. “Just use your gift.”

“Grandmother?” Violet’s mind raced. “You’re supposed to be at the Dawn Court.”

“Never mind that,” her grandmother replied. “Use your gift.”

Yes, use your gift. Don’t worry about the fact that your grandparents have been MIA for ages, only to show up when the shit hits an industrial-sized fan.

Violet looked down at the fae, at his glittery metallic skin, purple blood and bashed-up face. “You may not have heard, but I can suck a person’s soul straight from the body. Want to learn what it feels like?”

A shudder coursed through him, and his resistance shattered. “We were told to come here and wait until after you’d been taken to Lightsword.
