Chapter Seventeen

Maybe Batman was right when he said the day is always darkest before the dawn. Maybe Ramesh was too and my lowest ebb comes just before a great, victorious high. Well, at least I hope so, as I spent the next hour ringing everyone to come to Kebe’s house and by the time we got there, it was certainly dark out. The streetlamps illuminated the pavement in front of her property with little orange pools of light but, unlike a few other buildings on the street, there were no early Christmas decorations on display to cut through the gloom.

We were back in the room where it had all begun. The room where Sammy had consumed the substance that would lead to his death. The same room where we had gathered to remember him. But there would be no dancing on this occasion and Julie Andrews and Ramesh weren’t there to lighten the mood.

“I’m here today to confirm your fears,” I announced, standing at the end of the long dining table with the eight suspects all in place. “Sammy was murdered.”

Sammy’s grandmother made no reaction but Patience reached across the oval mahogany table to hold her husband’s hand. Keira was crying of course, Beth looked shocked and even Eddie was more solemn and contained than normal. But it was Jaxon and Jacob who I watched most closely.

Irons was there to provide an unofficial security detail in case anything got out of hand. I didn’t think the real detectives on the case would have entertained my dramatic impulses.

“I’m afraid that, to explain what happened to Sammy, I’m going to have to reveal some things that many of you here would not want getting out.” I looked at Kebe then who silently nodded her acquiescence. “We all have secrets that we’d rather the world didn’t know and I can promise you that they will be kept in confidence but obviously I will have to inform the police of exactly what happened to Sammy on the day he died.”

I turned to look at the photos of the deceased actor on the wall behind me. “There were many theories which entered my mind as I interviewed you. Sordid scandals, like newspaper headlines, splashed through my thoughts but the truth was much sadder than anything I initially landed on. His former manager showed little emotion at Sammy’s funeral, despite the
