Chapter Eighteen
I was amazed to see that most people went back to their dancing as though a woman hadnât just run into the room screaming but, once I understood the problem, there was someone I had to tell. Nurse Crouch was at the party, and I was fairly confident that her first-aid skills would be better than mine.
âOf course, this sort of thing wouldnât happen if theyâd kept a school nurse on the payroll,â she exclaimed. Although I somehow doubted this was the case, she was willing to come along with us, so I wasnât about to argue. âThey invest all their money these days in computers and security systems, but thereâs no dedicated member of staff to put a plaster on little Billyâs knee or take Suzieâs temperature. Thereâs no one to make sure kids are getting their daily carton of milk or to talk to each class about the food pyramid. This world isnât what it used to be.â
She was a big woman with shoulders that were broader than an oxâs back and a round, fleshy face that was stuck in a constant state of disapproval.
âThatâs very interesting, Nurse Crouch,â I told her, before turning the discussion back to more useful topics. âPerhaps we should listen to what Shandy has to say before we get to Danny.â
âGood idea,â she grumbled, as she stopped at the door to her old room. âIâll just need one thing.â She popped inside, then reappeared a moment later looking very confused. âThereâs a very polite man being projected onto the wall in there. Heâs pouring out cups of tea for a group of chatty, middle-aged people and he could see me as I walked in.â
âYes, thatâll be my dad. Iâd explain what theyâre all doing butâ¦â I didnât know how to finish that sentence, so I turned to my friend, who was apparently still disturbed by whatever sheâd seen. âShandy, can you tell us exactly what happened?â
She kept her eyes dead ahead as she navigated the corridor back to the West Block. âWell⦠Danny and I followed Verity. She was looking very pleased with herself, and we knew she was up to something. But just before we got to the toilets, we lost sight of her around a bend. We couldnât follow her too closely, as sheâd have spotted us otherwise.â
Sheâd fallen into that gloomy sort of hush that witnesses often adopt, and so I prompted her for more. âWhat happened next? Did you go into the toilet or find her somewhere else?â
She looked at me as though sheâd forgotten I was there. It was rare to see Shandy being anything but cheery and bright. âThere was no sign of Verity in that corridor, and I felt sure she must have gone into the toilets; it was the only obvious place. Danny waited outside because he said he wasnât the sort to go into a ladiesâ toilet without permission. I thought that was rather sweet, and so I gave him a big kiss andâ.
