About the Author

Will Eisner (1917–2005) was present at the birth of the comic book industry in the 1930s, creating such titles as Blackhawk and Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. He created The Spirit in 1940, syndicating it for twelve years as a unique and innovative sixteen-page Sunday newspaper insert, with a weekly circulation of 5 million copies. As a Pentagon-based warrant officer during World War II, Eisner pioneered the instructional use of comics, continuing to produce them for the U.S. Army under civilian contract into the 1970s, along with educational comics for clients as diverse as General Motors and elementary school children.

In 1978 Eisner created A Contract With God, launching a bold new literary genre. Nearly twenty celebrated graphic novels followed, affirming his position as the grand old man of comics. Since 1988 the comic industry’s top awards for excellence have been called “The Eisners.” Throughout his career, Eisner received numerous honors and awards worldwide, including only the second Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture (2002). In 2005, as one of his final projects, Eisner created The Contract With God Trilogy, which combined three of his great semiautobiographical novels all set on the mythical Dropsie Avenue in the Bronx—A Contract With God, A Life Force, and Dropsie Avenue. Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is based in good part on Eisner.
