Chapter 15

The plan was to separate Tori and Stephanie and find out what their argument was about. If we could pull them apart, we’d be able to compare notes and see if their stories matched up, or if there were inconsistencies. Or had they already solidified their stories?

It’s not like I wanted to go to the vigil, but it was imperative to see who showed up, and how everyone reacted amongst our group. Honestly, it was hard to believe this was real. It’d only just happened, and already, before anybody could absorb the situation, we’d be face-to-face.

Were they aware it’d turned into a murder investigation? Or were they still under the impression that it was an accident? I knew based on the police investigation and medical examiner’s report. What did each of the others know?

Astrid and I made our way to the vigil. People had started gathering. There was a table where candles were being handed out, so everybody could hold one in honor of Brit.

I was surprised to see the newcomers there. I guess they were paying their respects, but I didn’t think they actually knew Brit. It was a nice community thing to get involved in, at least. It was nice they showed. I just hadn’t expected them.

Camilla and Ty waved us down when they spotted us. Camilla gave me a hug. “How are you?”

“I’m not sure.”

Ty hugged me, then said hi to Astrid, though it was a touch cold. Did he not like her? Or was he still bitter I wasn’t there when he showed up with donuts and Diet Coke?

Our plan to get Stephanie and Tori alone would have to wait. They were amongst others and ready to get started. The women asked everyone to gather around. They wanted to share a few words about Brit. While it was tender and kind, there was palpable tension between them, like not knowing who would speak first. Once they’d gotten over the awkward hurdle at the beginning, things smoothed over.

We began a planned path not far from the trail, and I knew it was time to drive a wedge between the women if we wanted to speak with them. I whispered to Astrid what my goal was. She nodded, agreed, and we both focused on our targets.

I’d step between them, and nudge Tori over a smidge, while Astrid would then step between me and Stephanie, which then put Tori and Stephanie two people apart. From there, I’d slow up, and keep her beside me while Stephanie and Astrid continued at a quicker pace. In my mind, it seemed to be a good plan, but we’d need them to go along with it, unknowingly.

Here went nothing.

I made my move, slid in beside her, and spoke softly. “Tori, that was really nice what you said back there—about Brit. I’m sorry things got ugly on social media. To be honest, I hate stuff like that, because it never comes across right, and you say things you probably wouldn’t in person. I’m sorry if I said anything that upset or offended you.
