Chapter Eleven
Two days later, Jenny had given up on backing off or ignoring Eric. Their time together on the front porch had cut through the tension, and theyâd parted that night with what felt like the beginning of something good. What exactly that was remained to be seen. He was a man whose life had thrown him some major curves, and heâd built thick protective barriers. A slow and gentle approach was the way to move forward.
After a morning walk with Lilly and Brad, Jenny followed the two of them into the library. Eric sat at an antique dark wood deskâthe only piece of furniture in the large roomâworking on his computer. Most of the built-in shelves were empty except for an area where heâd started unpacking a stack of boxes with books handwritten across the sides. A bottom shelf was set up with a few childrenâs books and small toys. She liked the way heâd set up little areas for his daughter in all the rooms where he spent time. He was a wonderful father, and it made her wonder what hers wouldâve been like.
âHi, Daddy.â
âHey, Lilly Bug. What are you doing?â
âIâm walking and walking.â The wheels of her go-go bumped softly over the old floorboards as she and her dog made a circle around the desk, then stopped at her area to play. Brad nuzzled her cheek then ambled over to lie across Ericâs feet.
Jenny and Eric shared a smile. âSome comfy chairs would be good in front of that fireplace.â She ignored her phone chiming from her back pocket.
âGood idea. And a rug. It echoes in here.â He tapped his hand on the desktop in demonstration.
âWell, at least your desk is perfect for this room.â
âIt belonged to Travis.â
Her phone continued to chime like she was the most popular person in town.
âSomeone sure wants to get ahold of you,â he said and stretched his arms above his head.
To keep from looking at the way the muscles of his arms and chest flexed, she pulled the phone from her pocket and glanced at the screen. Every member of Queen Mothers was texting her with some version of the same message. They wanted her to meet them at the shop so they could discuss something. She chuckled. âIâm being summoned by the Queen Mothers.â
His eyes widened. âThat sounds official. Does Oak Hollow have royalty or is that code for something?â
âThat depends on who you ask. Itâs a group of ladies who have been sewing together for many years. Ansonâs grandmother and mine are members. They meet every week in a back room at the fabric store, Queenâs Sew ânâ Sew.â
âDo you think something is wrong?â
âNo. All the texts read more like theyâre plotting something.â She adored these lively ladies who had taught her so much over the years. There was no telling what had them so worked up today. âGuess I should stop by and see what words of wisdom they have to share. I do have a few errands I need to run.
