Chapter Eleven
âYou!â Duncan barked out. âYouâre that wedding planner. Emma something-or-other.â
âIâm Emma Cassidy.â She held her ground, even though her first instinct was to run. âAnd youâre Duncan Baird.â
âYou saw me.â He jabbed a meaty finger at her. âThat day when that no-good loser stuck the boot into me. You saw the whole thing.â
Why was he so angry with her? âYes, thatâs right,â she replied steadily. âI was there when Trent fired you.â At the time, sheâd assumed Duncan was too riled up to notice her, but apparently she was wrong.
He scrunched his eyebrows into a thick ridge. âYou told the cops! You sicced them onto me, didnât you? You think itâs fun being dragged out of a bar in handcuffs? You think itâs fun having that Detective Gambino barking questions at me all night long? Well, do you?â With each question he inched closer, until he was breathing down on her, the sour smell of him so thick she wanted to gag.
But she wasnât going to let this hot-tempered bully intimidate her. She stood her ground, ignoring his odor. âYou threatened Trent, and then someone killed him. Of course the police would be interested in you. And judging by your attitude, you didnât make things easy for yourself. But, seeing as theyâve released you, I suppose they think youâre innocent.â
âThey didnât say that. Guess they didnât find any of my fingerprints at the crime scene, but I donât have an alibi for the night of the murder, so they still have an eye on me.â He let out a snort.
Interesting. So Duncan must have been released because there was no further evidence against him. Which didnât mean he was innocent. She took a cautious step backward. But would a guilty man confront her on a public street in the middle of the day and draw attention to himself?
âWell, youâre not helping yourself by bothering me like this.â She edged to one side, but he blocked her path again. She glanced over her shoulder. The sidewalk was surprisingly empty for this time of day.
âBut I didnât do it,â Duncan insisted. âI didnât kill the little twerp, although God knows he was asking for it.â
âJust because he fired you?â
âThe reason he fired me was because I was good at my job and he was crap at his and I didnât keep quiet about it. I worked at Maravilla for five years. Five long, hard years. I put my sweat and blood into that place. Sal was a good man to work for. Ezra, too. But then that Trent came waltzing in, with his flashy suits and his fancy car, and just because heâs Chalmersâ boy, he got shot into the top position. He didnât deserve it!â
âAnd I suppose you think you did?â
âMe?â Duncanâs fuzzy eyebrows shot up. âNo way. I donât want to be general manager. I like being outdoors in the vineyards. No, the only person who deserves that position is Ezra.â
âEzra Neeson? Isnât he already working as Salâs assistant
