“Ah, Theresa. You are the light of my life.”

As the steam poured around them above the mineral springs, all was quiet except for an occasional snort of the horses tied to the tree branch. Cal was going to make sure his wife would never be able to resist his charm for the rest of their lives.

Theresa didn’t want to get up from where they sat on the large boulder. “Do you think they will sell you this land?”

“Who?”

“The people that own the land.”

“No one owns the land, Theresa.”

“Well, then how do you buy it if no one owns it? Sounds to me like you can just claim it.” She was exasperated. Calvin was joking around but this was a serious matter. If what he said was true and he was able to buy the land adjacent to his property, her sister and parents would be free to come here for treatment. The hot springs would be right out the back door, basically. The ranch house was big enough for her family, even if they decided to have children.

And she’d be free of Clinton Morris forever!

He wouldn’t be able to force her to write any letters or spy on his own son ever again.

She closed her eyes and when she opened them back up she was looking at the beautiful blue sky with bountiful white fluffy clouds. If she stretched her arm she was sure the fluffy forms would fall right in her palms.

The sky here seemed so close and yet the mountains loomed over their world like big monsters. Theresa knew her family would love it here.

She just had to figure out how to make it all happen.

Without being able to tell anyone about their secret hot springs, how would she arrange for her family to get here? Calvin asked her to trust him and let him take care of it but she kept wanting to pull it from his hands. Maybe I should put it in God’s hands!

“I’ll talk to Ralph Planter next time we go to Pistol Ridge.”

“Who is he?”

“The Land Agent in this territory. He’ll have all the information on selling us a parcel. I suspect he will be curious why I want a small parcel when I just bought this ranch.”

“It’s really none of his business.”

“True. You are a bit of a minx, aren’t you?” He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her up. They had sat on the huge boulder for a few hours, talking and daydreaming while their clothes dried. It was not cold at all and Theresa flung herself against his broad chest.

“I most certainly am.” She gave him a deep kiss and shivered. “It’s a bit damp though. I better get my wrap since I don’t want to take ill. I’ve seen what a fever can do to a healthy soul.”

“Well then, let’s get you all warmed up. Don’t let this warm weather fool you. The temperatures can drop fast.”

Theresa hadn’t needed much outerwear living in Texas since the nights didn’t get that cold.
