Chapter

Eight

I stared at Kat in disbelief. My hunch was right. Serena was Josh’s ex-girlfriend. Suddenly our run-in earlier made much more sense. “We need to let Chief Meyers know. This information will likely change the scope of her investigation.”

“Yeah, you should go right now.” Kat motioned to the door. “I can finish the rest of the prep, but you have to promise to tell me what Chief Meyers says.”

“Deal.” I gave her a thumbs up. “Thanks so much for your help. What would we do without you?”

“Are you kidding? Now I can add social media detective to my résumé. I’m basically a pro now. Maybe I should offer up my services as Chief Inspector.”

“It’s a skill.” I grinned and left the kitchen. Hopefully, Chief Meyers was still at the hostel or at her office near Front Street Park. Nervous energy buzzed through my body as I gave Garrett the update and went outside. The aroma of cherry blossoms and jasmine wafted through the warm afternoon air. Their intoxicatingly sweet scent reminded me to breathe deeper.

I checked The Gasthaus, but the officer stationed at the hostel reported that Chief Meyers had left to follow up on some leads about thirty minutes earlier. I didn’t have any luck at the station either, so I left her a detailed voicemail and texted her links to the threatening post Kat had found.

I would have preferred to speak directly with Chief Meyers, but there wasn’t much more I could do until I heard back from her, so I crossed the street and had started to make the short return trip to Nitro when I noticed a familiar face coming out of the pretzel shop—Annabelle.

Was she trying to be incognito in a pair of black jeans and a black hoodie tucked over her head? I almost turned the other way, but she caught my eye, glanced around her, and then motioned to the park.

I watched her skittish movements like she was worried that she was being watched as I met up with her at the gazebo.

Annabelle sank onto one of the benches and opened a bag of pretzels. “Would you like one?”

“No, thanks. I’m fine,” I said, sitting next to her. “But, as always, they smell amazing.”

“Do you care if I eat while we chat? I’m a comfort eater, and my stress level is off the charts right now.” She lifted six pretzels, each bigger than her face, from the bag. “I went overboard, but I couldn’t decide on a flavor, so I got one of everything they had.”

“That sounds like the perfect plan to me. Plus, pretzels keep.” My gaze drifted toward the pretzel shop across the street. Was Annabelle in danger? Was she telling me the truth about Weber being a teddy bear, or could she be running from him?

“They might not today.” She returned the stack to the bag and sank her teeth into a cinnamon and sugar-coated pretzel. “I’m teetering on the edge, Sloan. In fact, I’m really glad I saw you because I really need some advice.
