Florrie had left New River House the evening before relieved and happy at having handed her burden to Mabel, who now felt the weight of it. It was another puzzle to solve. Mabel liked a good puzzle, but she wasn’t necessarily good at trying to solve two at the same time.

She was contemplating her approach on Saturday morning over a second cup of tea, when Mr Chigley came up to tell her there was someone on the telephone for her.

‘Thomas has yet to bring the employee records to me,’ Rosalind said after an initial greeting. ‘He’s being rather mulish about this, I must say. He’ll be in his office – they work half a day on Saturdays – and so, I thought you could go and fetch them? I’ll telephone and tell him you’re on your way. And don’t worry, I’ll settle all this up with Miss Kerr.’

‘Miss Kerr doesn’t matter at the moment,’ Mabel said. ‘I don’t want you to think you need to hire Useful Women to solve a murder.’ And yet, as she said the words, she thought, Why not? ‘I’m doing this because I want to.’

‘How lucky I was that you were assigned to the wake,’ Rosalind said.

‘It was chance, you do know that?’

‘Yes, I do,’ Rosalind said with an annoyed tone. ‘And I know what Park has said to you, but he sees danger where there is none.’

Mabel had toyed with the idea that the reason Winstone was so guarded about Mabel’s interest in Guy and the dead man at the wake was because he had done something he didn’t want his sister to know about. A protective nature could go too far, couldn’t it? The idea had taken up residence in a dark corner of Mabel’s mind and she’d as yet been able to turf it out.
