LOCKER ROOM TALK

“Just the witch I wanted to see.” I linked my arm through Yasmine’s on our way to the pool and filled her in on our suspicions about Janisa faking her cancer. I also showed her the vitamin packet Serena had given Cho.

Yas tossed her beach towel over her shoulder and gave me a wry grin. “Maybe I should’ve gone to that party, after all.” We moved slowly down the hall, Yasmine now leaning heavily on me. “Maybe a little supernatural pick me up would do me some good.”

I pressed my lips together, sympathetic. I knew she wasn’t serious about the vampire blood, but I wished there was some other way I could help my friend. “Are you feeling that hike and the gardening today? That was a lot, huh?”

She nodded and rolled her eyes. “It’s my own fault—I pushed myself too hard, but I was having fun.”

I shot her a questioning look as we stepped into the women’s locker room. “Are you going to be okay doing water aerobics?”

She snorted. “I’d pass out. No, my plan is to lounge in the jacuzzi.” She gave a serene smile, and I grinned.

“That’s not a bad idea.”

“Wow.” Yas’s eyes widened in surprise as we rounded the corner and stepped into the beautifully lit, Zen room. Wooden lockers lined the walls, plush robes hung from hooks on the tiled walls, and round ring light mirrors hung over the marble vanity. Of course, Janisa sat in a fluffy white robe with one shoulder exposed, perched on a stool at the vanity. She posed as Karine snapped pics for her. We set our bags down on the nearest bench, and Karine waved. “Hey, girls!”

We waved back, and as I slipped out of my shoes, I gasped. “Even the marble floors are heated.”

Yas let out a wistful sigh. “Can we move in here?”

I changed into my cute new one piece, slid into one of the soft complimentary robes and rubber slides, and then opened a locker to stash my stuff inside. To my surprise, someone else’s belongings already occupied the space. My first instinct was to close it and look for an open locker, but I hesitated and glanced over my shoulder. With the girls distracted by taking pics, I nudged Yas.

“I think this is Janisa's bag,” I whispered. I was pretty sure I’d seen her carrying it at one point yesterday.

Yas raised a confused brow.

I didn’t feel great about this, but my curiosity got the best of me. “Keep an eye out.”

She planted her hands on her hips and looked exasperated but turned her back to me as I’d asked. I tugged the twill bucket bag open. Various patches and buttons covered the outside, and the inside was a mess. I dug through pill cases, pens, bags of makeup and rifled past her wallet. I knew it wasn’t cool to snoop like this, but what if Janisa had something to do with Irene’s death? We didn’t know for sure that Irene had been killed, yet, but my witchy intuition told me something suspicious was up.
