Chapter 13

Monica was almost home when her cell phone rang. She pulled onto the shoulder and retrieved her phone.

“It’s Gina. You have to join me today at Soul Spring Spa. Kiran has arranged a wonderful new class for us. I’ve never done it before but it sounds like fun.”

“What is it?” Monica hoped Gina couldn’t hear the dread in her voice.

“Hula-Hoops! It’s the latest thing. It’s an amazing workout for the core. It really hits your abdominal muscles and your obliques, leading to a slimmer waist. It also burns fat and calories.”

“You’re beginning to sound like an infomercial.”

“Come on. You’ve got that babysitter for the day. You might as well take advantage of it.”

Monica tried to remember Hula-Hooping as a kid. Had she been any good at it? She couldn’t remember but she doubted it. She’d never really gotten the hang of jumping rope either.

But Gina was a force of nature and Monica eventually agreed to go home, change into workout clothes and meet her at the Soul Spring Spa.

Alice was sitting in the living room knitting, keeping a watchful eye on Teddy, who was sleeping in his carry cot, when Monica arrived home. Hercule was doing his part as well, curled up next to the cot and napping with one eye partially open.

“Everything go okay?”

“Just fine. No need to worry. Teddy is a little angel.”

Monica let her breath out. “That’s good.” She hesitated. Would Alice think she was a bad parent if she went out again? “I was thinking of going to an exercise class with my stepmother.” It came out as a question instead of a statement.

“Go.” Alice made a shooing motion with her hand. “We’re perfectly fine. New mothers need some time for themselves or they’ll burn out, and that won’t do either you or the baby any good.”

“Okay. I won’t be long.”

“Take your time,” Alice called out as Monica ran up the stairs.

Monica quickly changed. She looked at herself in the mirror and frowned. If she was going to continue doing this, she’d have to get some proper workout clothes.

Within minutes, she was in the car and on her way to downtown Cranberry Cove. She spotted Gina’s Mercedes in the parking lot and was relieved. She realized her palms were sweaty and she dried them on a tissue she dug from her purse. She threw her shoulders back and opened the door to Soul Spring Spa.

The sense of peace the spa created swept over her and her breathing slowed and her fists unclenched. The neutral wall and furniture colors were soothing, the air was lavender-scented and soft music played in the background.

Gina was waiting for her by the cubbies.

“You’re going to love this,” she said as Monica stashed her purse.

“You’ve done it before?”

“No, but everything Kiran does is wonderful.”

Monica still wasn’t persuaded but she followed Gina into the workout room, where a stack of colorful Hula-Hoops waited beside the door.

Kiran was sitting on the floor at the front of the room in Lotus Pose, each ankle crossed over the opposite leg.
