Chapter 14

Daphne was relieved when I shared the reading I did. She knew she had truth on her side. On top of that, Hope’s grandson was available to help with the alarm system, so she wouldn’t have to wait too long. I offered to sit with him while he did the installation if she didn’t feel comfortable being at the shop so soon, but she said the sooner she got back to her normal life, the better it would be for her. I was proud of her for pushing through.

The last few days had been difficult. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do to speed up the process. She looked weary, her eyes held bags that weren’t there previously, and her color was blanched.

“Rosie’s texted and called more than she used to. We were never super close, but with everything going on, she’s been supportive. It’s been nice,” she admitted. “I hope it’s the start of a better relationship. It’s not that we don’t get along, we’ve just never been very close with our interests being so far apart.”

“I hope so. I adore you both. I’m so sorry this craziness has marred your arrival in town, but it will be behind you and a distant memory, soon enough.”

“We can hope.” She crossed her fingers like a schoolgirl on a playground.

When John arrived to install her alarm, she was relieved. “Thank you for fitting me in your schedule so quickly.”

“No problem. It’s what I do. In fact, I installed Nolan’s alarm system too.”

“I didn’t know he had one.” Why hadn’t it gone off when she entered?

“Yeah, but I was glad when that job was over. He’s nasty, cranky, and mean. Well…was. He bossed me around like I’m some idiot, even though he hired me to do the job. He wasn’t good at keeping his opinions to himself if you ask me.”

“I feel seen,” she said with a soft smile.

“It’s him, not you. He was paranoid half the time, always thinking somebody was after him, like some conspiracy theorist. He swore they’d catch up to him, because they knew he was smart. He’d always ramble on about weirdo stuff like that. He was an odd duck, for sure.”

When he’d finished installing the alarm system, John helped Daphne learn how to set it and how to disengage it as well.

Later that same afternoon, Officer Spellman stopped by to see Daphne. He had a quick follow up question to ask. He probably could have called but stopping in to see her wouldn’t be the worst part of his day.

Daphne was surprised he’d come back so soon. “Officer Spellman, was there something you needed? I went to the station yesterday.”

“Call me Landon. I saw you’d stopped by the station; thanks for getting it handled so quickly. I actually have a quick question for you.”

“Oh, before I forget, did you know that Nolan had an alarm system? I spoke with John today, and he’d mentioned that he’d installed one not long ago.”

“We’re aware, but it was disarmed.
