Chapter 22

About six in the evening, Jeremy and Rob entered the house, both grinning from ear to ear, their hands behind

their backs.

Aimee greeted them in the living room. “Okay, guys, what are you up to?” She folded her arms, her eyes narrowed. “Did you

get something?”

Rob whispered in Jeremy’s ear.

He turned to Rob, smiled and then looked to his mother. He brought his hands in front, a ring-necked rooster pheasant in each one. “Look what Rob got.”

“Nice,” Aimee exclaimed. “I’m impressed.” She stepped closer to examine the game.

“Rob let me shoot first, but I missed,” Jeremy said.

“Your day will come,” Rob informed the boy. “You need more practice. You did great your first time out.” He directed his next statement to Aimee. “Here’s one more for the pot,” presenting a bird from behind his back.

“Awesome.” She looked from one to another. “Do the two of you think you could eat some dinner?”

Jeremy nodded. “I’m starved.”

“Thanks. I think I will, too,” Rob stated, pleased. “These birds will keep awhile longer, I’m sure.”

“Just set them on the back porch while I put dinner on the table,” Aimee said going for the kitchen.

Rob did as instructed, after which he washed his hands and took a place at the kitchen table. Aimee slid a simple, wooden crate up to the table and sat.

“As you can see, we are not prepared for company,” Aimee explained apologetically. “But I guess you know that after you and Veda spent time here.”

“No, problem. It’s the people I’m with that matter the most.” Rob smiled.

Nervous, she cleared her throat. “I know you’re our guest, Rob, but would you mind saying grace?”

After he said a simple blessing over the food, she dished up the spaghetti pie casserole and passed around the French bread and salad.

Jeremy’s face became animated. “Boy, I’m going to have a lot to tell the guys at school.”

“And your grandparents,” Aimee added, smiling. She discovered through conversation, that Scott and Seth had gotten

one pheasant.

When Jeremy had wound down enough to sit and eat his dinner, Rob spoke to her. “How was your day?”

“Fine, just fine.” She shrugged. “Actually, it was slow and a rather easy day for me.”

“Good. Everyone needs those now and then,” Rob said. “Would you mind if I borrowed your son for the day, tomorrow?”

Surprised, Aimee nodded. “No, not at all.” She gave her son a sly look. “That’s provided he really wants to.”

“Wow, that would be way cool,” Jeremy burst out.

Rob and Aimee laughed.

“There is your answer, Rob.”

The meal finished, Rob offered to help clean up.

“Nonsense, you and Jeremy see to the birds.”

“I’m looking forward to that pheasant dinner,” he reminded her.

“Sure. Maybe a week from Saturday if that will work for you.”

“I’ll clear my calendar if I have to.” He grinned and planted a quick kiss on her cheek, then left the kitchen, coat in hand.

Anxious, her eyes went to her son. Jeremy was shrugging into his coat taking it all in, grinning from ear to ear.

Walking past his mother on his way out the door, he whispered, “He’s cool, Mom.
