It had been a long time since Honey had driven the scenic rural road leading to Tucker’s farm. The lush green countryside hadn’t changed, and the scent of honeysuckle lining the two-lane road filled the air for miles. She glanced at Elvis, who had his head hanging out the window, his jowls flapping in the wind. Elvis was in his happy place. “Do you smell the honeysuckle, Elvis?”

She’d driven for nearly thirty minutes and hadn’t seen another car. This is the perfect place to meet someone in secret. “I think we are getting close, Elvis.” The farm was several hundred acres, and she couldn’t remember the exact location of the driveway. In the distance, she saw a car pulling out on the road. She squinted, trying to determine the color of the car. Yellow or cream? The sun was too bright and she was too far away to be certain. As she approached the area when the car had pulled out, she slowed down. Though the driveway was hidden by the dense brush, she saw a sliver of asphalt peeking through the greenery. If only she’d been a minute earlier she might have been able to see the driver of that car. The driveway was at least five hundred feet long, ending at the old antebellum-style mansion. She looked for a sign to see if the property was for sale, but if there was one, it had succumbed to the unkempt foliage.

At the end of the driveway, Honey turned off the engine. “Let’s look around, Elvis.” She reached in her purse, pulled out her phone, and shoved it in her pocket. As soon she grasped the door latch, Elvis was crawling over her to jump out first. “Hang on, you’re squashing me.”

Once the door was opened, Elvis leaped to the ground and started sniffing the driveway. Honey walked up the stairs to the columned porch and looked through the door’s sidelight. In the massive circular foyer she saw a huge crystal chandelier suspended over a large round marble table. Beyond the wide arch of the foyer she could see furniture and large paintings lining the walls. Everything looked neat and orderly. She found it odd that a home everyone thought had been vacant for years had such expensive furnishings inside. She knocked on the door, but didn’t really expect anyone to answer.

Elvis joined her on the porch and Honey scratched his long floppy ears. “Let’s walk to the back, Elvis.” When they reached the back of the house, she stopped to look through the back door glass, but Elvis continued on, sniffing his way to one of the large outbuildings.

Honey followed Elvis to the building that looked more like a large warehouse than the barn she remembered. With nose to the ground, Elvis walked the length of the metal sliding door. Honey thought about peeking inside the building, but the door was padlocked. She couldn’t imagine why someone would build such a costly structure on property that was vacant. Pulling her phone out of her pocket, she checked for a signal.
