When we got home, London went up to her apartment to read and I looked forward to a hot bath. I opened the door to find Abby and Chuck in the kitchen, clinking glasses of wine as though they were celebrating something. I wondered if I’d forgotten their anniversary.

‘Have you heard the news, Phoebe?’ Chuck said.

‘No, what?’

‘They’ve found Peter Philby!’

My heart skipped. ‘They did? Where? Is he alive?’

‘Yes, he’s alive. A policeman spotted him near his house.’

‘When was this?’

‘Just now! It was on the news!’ Abby said gleefully.

‘Do they know where he’s been?’

‘No details yet,’ Chuck said. ‘They’re checking him out.’

‘But he’s all right?’

‘He’s back, Phoebe. That’s the main thing. He’s only four. It may take a little time to get the story out of him.’

‘I’ve got to let London and Washington know.’
