Chapter 8
Thankfully, due to the fact that Colin called and worked things out with the warden ahead of time, my trip to San Quentin was fairly painless. I was told to arrive at an entrance not accessible to the typical visitor, where I was checked in and escorted directly to the room where Iâd been given thirty minutes to chat with Sampson. The man I was there to see was escorted in within a minute of my arrival. The guard who was with him took a position nearby, and I introduced myself and explained my reason for being there. I wasnât sure what I was expecting from the man, but I wasnât expecting the look of anger and surprise that crossed his face when I filled him in on the details relating to Shawnaâs stalker. If not for the fact that I knew that most sociopaths were excellent liars, I would have been convinced right then and there that the man had no idea as to what had been happening on the outside.
âSo you arenât aware of whatâs been going on with your daughter?â I asked to clarify his reaction to my news.
âNo. Of course not. Iâve kidnapped, tortured, and killed a lot of people in my day, but they all deserved it. My Shawna is a good girl who understands the importance of doing as sheâs told and not asking questions.â
âDid you know that Shawna was aware of what you were doing to those women?â To this point, I honestly hadnât been sure whether or not Sampson knew that Shawna had been watching before her mother had whisked her away.
âShawna had a natural curiosity, so I knew sheâd find a way in if I left the door open.â
âYou enjoyed having an audience.â
He smiled. It wasnât a warm and comforting smile, but more of an âI know where you live and plan to kill you while you sleepâ sort of smile.
âIf you wanted Shawna to watch, and Shawna wanted to watch, why didnât you instruct your wife to let her stay?â
âMy wife didnât know that I knew that Shawna was there. If she knew that I wanted our daughter to share with me the deeply religious ceremony Iâd planned to perform on the woman in the basement, she would likely have gone to the cops despite my warning not to. I knew she felt bad about what was going on and wanted to tell someone, but I also knew that she wanted to protect Shawna from ever knowing the truth. I convinced her that if she talked, everyone would find out what was really going on in the basement, including Shawna.â
The guy definitely had a twisted way of viewing the world. And Sampsonâs reasoning was about as flawed as any Iâd encountered in someone whoâd been as successful at killing as heâd been. Yet he had managed to kill six women in less than a year without getting caught, so perhaps he wasnât as clueless as he seemed.
âI guess your
