There was nothing better than a full belly and the love of your life next to you to help you get a great night’s sleep. Or maybe it was that I hadn’t slept a wink the night before, but I’ll say the warmth of the bed with Patrick, Sassy, and Pepper making it all cozy got me the shut-eye needed to ensure I was wide awake and raring to go when the alarm went off.
“Good morning.” I looked up and saw Patrick standing over me with a cup of coffee. “I didn’t even hear you get out of bed.”
“You were out.” He smiled and gave me the coffee once I pushed myself up in the bed.
Sassy jumped off. Pepper stayed tucked in the covers next to me.
“I got a service call from Camey.” He had done all the remodeling for Cocoon Hotel, and Camey was great about calling Patrick if something needed to be repaired. “One of their ovens isn’t working in the kitchen.”
He sat on the edge of the bed and put on his work boots.
“Tell her I’ll be down to bring her coffee this morning.” I pulled the covers off. Pepper stuck his head out from underneath. “I’m sure Bunny has it all ready. Ask Camey if she needs me to bring anything for her guests to eat.”
Not that I had a lot, but I certainly had enough in the Bean Hive freezer to take down to her guests while Patrick fixed the oven.
“I will.” He got up, turned, and kissed me goodbye. “You keep your nose out of anything that’ll get you in trouble.”
I gave him a smile and wink. We both knew I wasn’t going to commit to anything that I couldn’t guarantee.
“Love you!” I hollered out to him. I pulled the covers back over me when my legs got a chill. “Just a few more minutes,” I told Pepper.
He immediately put his head under the cover, apparently thinking it was a great idea.
The coffee warmed me and got my brain in somewhat of a working order. Items on the to-do list I needed to accomplish today started to drift in one at a time.
“We need to go to the Bean Hive and get Camey her coffee for the hospitality room.” I was talking to Pepper like he was truly listening, but the light snoring from underneath the covers told me he was fast asleep. Sassy had gone to work with Patrick. “We also need to meet Yvonne at the sheriff’s department, which means I need to dress a little better than my regular Bean Hive clothing just in case Kirk shows up.”
It wasn’t unusual for Kirk to request to be present during a police interview of a potential suspect in a case he’d taken on. In this instance, I was sure he would enjoy having to deal with me.
“He has no idea what he’s in for.” I drank the last sip of coffee in my mug and put it down on the table. “Let’s get moving, Pepper.
