Fourteen

The color drained from Caden’s face when I asked if I’d been with Aimee in the moments before she’d taken her last breath. He stepped away from me and picked up the receiver on his office phone. “Trudy, I need you to snag Riley. Fill him in on what’s happened, and let him know that the details of what Shanna told me are on the yellow notepad in the room. Get our people on it right away. Then I need you to sit with the two ladies for a few minutes. Evie’s not feeling well, and I need to make sure she’s okay.”

He hung up the phone and returned to my side, sitting in the chair next to me.

I tucked my lips inward to keep them from trembling. “I was with Aimee, wasn’t I?”

He blew out a deep breath. “The honest answer is, I don’t know. No one does. Except maybe your parents. Birdie didn’t know either.”

I let the information sink in. “But you think I might have been, don’t you?”

Caden hesitated and then nodded.

“I think I remember it,” I whispered. Hurt and frustration welled inside me. “Why didn’t you say something? How could you not tell me something so important?”

Sorrow filled his eyes. “Because I honestly didn’t know, Evie. And I didn’t want to traumatize you unnecessarily.”

He raked his fingers through his hair. “That’s why I’ve been so afraid of your memories. Why I was glad when it was my kisses that brought them back. Or at least they did originally. You’re determined to remember everything from that summer, and I figured if I was with you when something horrific popped up, I could help you through it.”

My anger slowly faded, and I realized that whatever he’d done, he’d done it out of love. I filled my lungs and met his gaze. “You were there for me then, like you are now. Thank you for always taking care of me.”

His gaze intensified. “That’s the plan.”

I raised my brows, wondering if he’d suggested that would always be the case.

He held my gaze with a fierceness in his beautiful gray eyes. “I’ll say it again. That’s the plan, as long as you’ll let me.” He cupped my cheek. “Now, tell me about what you’ve remembered, and why you think you were there when Aimee died.”

I identified with how Shanna looked only moments ago, slammed with memories that left me confused and scared. “It was the way Shanna described the tattoo on the man who abducted her. It brought back a visceral memory in my mind, one of Aimee and me running for our lives, and then she was somehow hurt. I’m still shivering inside from the fear it brought back.”

A thought jumped in as quickly as the memory had, and I shifted in my chair to face him better. “Caden, what are the chances it’s the same man who hurt Aimee and killed Aunt Birdie, and who now might be after me?”

He slowly shook his head. “I’d say highly unlikely.”

I frowned. “Why?”

“Well, for one, Aimee’s murderer is already in jail.
