CHAPTER 3.

Choosing of Covered Storage for Bulk Materials

General

Covered storages for bulk materials (Dome-type, rectangular storages, silos, bins, and so on) are one of the important components of any material handling terminal, plant, seaport or riverport. Such bulk materials as coal, cement, grain, fertilizer, animal feed and so on, must be kept covered to prevent material degradation from winds, rains and so on, and to eliminate dust emission in accordance with very strict local and international environmental rules and regulations (ISO 14001 EMS and others).

The type, the main dimensions of, and the related material handling systems of the storage must be selected after a comprehensive analysis of such factors as required storing capacity, physical space available, bulk material properties and moisture content, loading and unloading rates, ambient climate conditions, duration of storing, and environmental requirements.

The loading and unloading equipment should be reliable, low-maintenance, and should provide the required capacity.

One of the essential characteristics of any bulk material is its tendency to agglomerate or consolidate when the bulk material loses its free-flowing ability (Figure 180). It should be considered together with any long-term storing (weeks or months), moisture content of the bulk material, and environmental relative humidity.

These variables are directly affecting the choice of the optimal material handling equipment.
