Millions of people use one every day without giving it a second thought. They are such small devices, who would stop to think that using a cell phone could be detrimental to your back? Due to the way we tilt our heads forward and down when using them, we are doubling, possibly tripling the weight of our head, and that weight is supported by our neck. The way we use cell phones and tablets is more than just a pain in the neck! It is also leading to pain in the shoulders, arms, and the upper mid back. The average human head weighs between ten and twelve pounds and that weight is supported by the neck muscles, tendons, and ligaments during movement and also when static. When we tilt our heads forward, we are engaging the use of our intervertebral discs that help absorb and distribute the forces exerted on our necks (Ammerman, 2019).

Joshua Ammerman (2019), has interestingly referred to computerised models that have come up with the following information on the strain placed on our necks when we tilt our heads forward: 15 degrees equates to the head weighing 27 pounds of strain, 30 degrees = 40 pounds, 45 degrees = 49 pounds, and 60 degrees = 60 pounds of strain. The average person has their head tilted forward two to four hours per day, teenagers even more, and as you tilt your head, your shoulders curve forward. This excess strain and wear and tear on the neck, shoulders, and upper back can lead to spinal degeneration. To reduce the risk of spinal degeneration, there are several things we can do. For example we can use a computer or laptop for extended internet browsing, not a tablet or cell phone. Try to raise your phone up to eye level when using it instead of tilting your head down.
