Chapter 8

Wormwood

Verse 5: “Then the angel took the censer, filled it with burning coals from the altar, and hurled it down to the earth.”

The First Four Trumpets. The angels who were holding the trumpets prepared to blow them.

Verse 7: “[First angel] hail and fire mixed with blood hurled down to the earth.”

Verse 8: “[Second angel] a large burning mountain hurled into the sea.”

Verse 10: “[Third angel] a large star burning like a torch fell from the sky.”

Verse 12: “[Fourth angel] a third of the sun, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them became dark. The day lost its light for a third of the time, as did the night.”

Verse 11: “The star was called ‘WORMWOOD.’ It made the water bitter and many people died.”

The top of the canvas shows the burning coals from the altar hurling down to the earth. Hail and fire mixed with blood are also hurled down to the earth. In the center of the canvas, a large burning mountain is hurled into the sea. The upper right corner has the large star burning like a torch falling from the sky. The star was called “Wormwood.”
