SECTION PROPOSE A CLASS THAT WHARTON 5 COULD INCLUDE IN ITS NEW
CURRICULUM
question Student and alumni engagement has at times led to the creation of innovative classes. For example, through extraordinary efforts, a small group of current students partnered with faculty to create a timely course entitled, Disaster Response: Haiti and Beyond, empowering students to leverage the talented Wharton community to improve the lives of the Haiti earthquake victims. Similarly, Wharton students and alumni helped to create, Innovation and Indian Healthcare Industry, a course which took students to India where they studied the full range of healthcare issues. If you were able to create a Wharton course on any topic, what would it be? (700 words)
INTRODUCTION This was an experimental essay for the Wharton application. It sheds some light on the kind of innovative, progressive and student-led activity common at the school. Students take a leadership role unparalleled at any other top business school and student initiatives and suggestions around possible new courses are taken very seriously.
This essay also brings up an excellent opportunity to be both thoughtful about one’s own experience and contribution, but also more technical and prescriptive. It is an excellent opportunity to shed light on the kind of contributions you might make in the classroom, based on your unique professional, geographical, and life experiences. Wharton prides itself on being a rigorous and analytical program and this essay demonstrates the kind of specific content that Wharton likes to develop, a mixture of the case and lecture style.
The Economics of Blood Distribution Given the shortages at many community blood centers that resulted from the lateDecember snowstorms along the Eastern seaboard, it is confounding that there is no consensus among academics, blood donation professionals and hospital administrators regarding the most effective methods to increase blood donation. I propose the following course to delve further into this issue.
Course Syllabus: The Economics of Blood Donation
I. Overview Approximately 15 million units of blood are needed annually in the United States for blood transfusions, many of which are life-saving, yet only three percent of the population donates blood. The objective of this course is to consider various approaches to incentivizing blood donation from both a conceptual and a practical framework. Students will compare Richard Titmuss’s seminal work in the analysis of prosocial behavior, The Gift Relationship, in which he concludes that financial self-interest crowds out altruism, to the results of a selection of empirical studies that have been conducted in various countries during the last five years. Divided into groups, students will conduct a hands-on examination of how incentives effect blood donation by hosting blood drives using incentives they devise.
II. Course Materials
Required Text: Titmuss, The Gift Relationship: From Human Blood to Social Policy (1971) webCafé: Materials for the project, selected readings and exam material will be posted for student access on webCafé. Readings may include but will not be limited to: • Pererira, The Economics of Blood Transfusion in the 21st Century (2007)
• Mellstrom and Johannsson, Crowding Out in Blood Donation: Was Titmuss Right?
