The first discipline of the painter is to make washes, first with India ink diluted with water, then with wash colors and gummed water, of geometric planes and solids, which are first to be traced from other model drawings, and later drawn by rule and compass with India ink, then their shadows washed, in monochrome to begin with, and then in polychrome. Thus from the very beginning, over tracings for which you may be completely ignorant of the science of drawing, you will wash the shadows and the modulations of simple geometric bodies, working up to the point of copying columns, pedestals and moldings, always after the immortal archetypes of Palladio and Bramante.
