Chapter 4
THE agency op wasnât sympathetic. He scrutinized the vicious bruise that began on OâHannaâs cheek-bone and angled up into his haircut. âWhat are you, anyway?- A house dick or the tin duck in a shooting gallery?â
OâHanna hated him. He didnât say much, for just then the phone rang. âNever mind, Iâll take it.â
Fencer shrugged, and brushed at the goose down adhering to his conservative business suit. âI shouldnât have said a tin duck. They donât grow feathers.â He stepped over and hauled down the window sash.
âHello?â OâHanna was saying.
The operator told him, âWe called Indian Prairie. Miss Beale hasnât any friends or family there. Itâs one of those thingsâthe Indian Prairie Central says no one there even knows anybody named Kitty Beale.â
âBad news?â Fencer questioned.
OâHanna said, âSo-so.â He walked to the door. âOh, hell, I wonât hold out on you. If weâre both running for the office of house dick here, Iâm willing to start from scratch with you.â
âWell?â
âKitty Beale isnât a schoolteacher from the Corn Belt,â OâHanna said. âNow we can go on from there, and may the best man win.â
Fencer looked genuinely grateful. âThatâs white of you. Maybe sometime I can give you a break. I hope so.â
OâHanna nodded, opened the door, and came to a dead stop. His Irish-blue eyes explored the sixth floor corridor, in both directions, incredulously.
âAnything wrong?â Fencerâs tone was friendly, now.
âNo.â OâHanna marveled that his voice sounded friendly, too. âNot a thing.â
There wasnât, eitherâvisibly. The corridor looked as fresh and tidy as the day it had originally been painted and carpeted.
âWell,â the agency dick said, âgood luck to you, old chap.â
âSame to you,â OâHanna said. He stepped out, pulled the door shut and glared at it. âRat!â he remarked under his breath. âLouse!â
He was probably taking a damned fool chance, OâHanna told himself. He hurried back to the Cobb suite anyway.
Doc Raymond, with shirt sleeves rolled to his elbows, sat beside the patient who was in bed in his bedroom.
âHow is he?â OâHanna asked.
Raymond turned both thumbs down. âWith his heart, heâs lucky to be alive. Another six months on his brand of liquid diet, and heâll be a dead man. In his condition, he might just as well drink embalming fluid in the first placeâcheaper and quicker.â
Cobbâs voice issued through the towels which swathed his face. âNuts, Doc. Higher-priced specialists than you gave me that song-and-dance years ago. I can kill a quart a day and still outlive all of you sour-pussed sawbones.â
Doc Raymond shrugged, walked across the room, and straightened a picture on the wall. âYour mistake. The quart a day is killing you.â
OâHanna peeled layers of towels, cold ones, off the patientâs putty-colored features. âWhat about the girl?â he demanded.
âI canât remember,â Cobb said vaguely. âThatâs always the way after a binge. I canât ever remember what I did. Was there a girl?â
âYou picked her up in the lobby,â OâHanna said.
âThat wasnât any girlâthat was my wife,â Cobb said. âItâs the last thing I do remember.â
âIce-pick,â OâHanna suggested hopefully.
âItâs no use.
