Chapter 9

By Wednesday morning, Taytum had shown up at her apartment, and in terms of identifying our victim or at least identifying the woman Carly thought she saw, we were back to square one. By this point, even I was beginning to doubt the accuracy of her memories.

“So this woman just heads out on a date on Friday evening and then ends up in the Bahamas with the guy she went to the charity event with,” Amy confirmed after I’d filled her in.

“That’s what Alex told me that Colt told her,” I said. “Alex admitted to having no idea why the woman would take off like that without calling her boss, a friend, or a neighbor, but apparently, Taytum didn’t have another date lined up until the following weekend, and she figured that as long as she was back by then, no one would miss her if she headed out with her client.”

“I guess I’m glad to know she’s okay,” Amy said.

“Me too, but I can’t help but wonder who our victim is if not her.” I paused. “Do you think that Carly saw what she thinks she saw? I mean, it has been four days. Shouldn’t we have a body or at least a missing person’s report by now?”

Amy shrugged. “Yeah. I guess. It really does seem like we should have an identity for the victim by this point. It really is odd that we don’t. Maybe something will turn up today.”

“Maybe. I think I’ll go ahead and run our deposit over to the bank before it gets too busy. With the amount of cash we’re taking in this week, I’m doing daily deposits rather than depositing our cash receipts twice a week as I normally do.”

“Okay,” Amy said. “Cambria and I will be here in the kitchen, making sure we have enough chicken wings and nacho toppings to feed an army.”

Amy might be exaggerating a bit, but feeding an army was a pretty good description of the quantity of food we’d gone through this week. While most of the food we’d served was bar food, which seemed to be favored by the evening crowd, the Halloween event also resulted in more meals being served in the dining area.

When I arrived at the bank, I found a line that nearly reached the entrance. During the busy morning hours, there were usually two tellers on the commercial side of the lobby and two tellers on the side designated for those individuals dealing with personal accounts. Today, however, only one woman was working the commercial window.

“Where’s Sue?” I asked Gwen when I finally reached the front of the line.

“She’s covering for Evelyn in the loan department, so we’ve been short one teller all week. I understand that the bank needs someone to be available to meet with customers looking to take out a loan, but the shift in personnel has been causing problems for those of us left to try to cover the shortage. If Evelyn doesn’t show up for her shift tomorrow, I think the rest of us are going to revolt.
