Chapter ten
Strengthening the ties that bind
Everyone in the Skating Rink seemed to know and to befriend Jim. Employees, Skaters, parents of youngsters, and especially the children themselves. Jim glanced at me for a moment as though he were drinking in my presence in order to preserve the memory of today. Finally he allowed his gaze to fall and remain at my feet for a moment. Then and without as much as a word, he was gone. Returning back to where he had left me only a few minutes later, Jim handed me a pair of size Eight Skates. At this point, I believe I was operating in somewhat of a maze. Once again, not only had Jim showed accuracy in selecting my shoe size, but in his ability to presume that I would be willing to put them on. âHow did you know my size?â I stammered weakly. Adding; âWhy did you feel it was unnecessary to ask?â I wanted to know. âWell when youâve looked at as many feet as I have had to in this type of Business, I guess you become pretty good at it, if you know what I mean.â Jim replied to my first question, and then continued on; âAnd you just happened to look like a perfect âEightâ, now please put them on and letâs see if you can skate a perfect âEight.â Jim then counter offered his first offer in adding; âAnd if you do well here by any chance young lady you may be headed for the ice next time.â I was truly speechless, so but for a brief chuckle we both shared, I somewhat reluctantly complied with his request.
Feeling somewhat frightened, yet excited by Jimâs challenge to Skate, my state of feelings where indeed heightened. With this heightened state of excitement permeating the air around us, I felt the need to inhale deeply taking the air into my lungs, before slowly exhaling. Repeating this several times until the oxygen seemed to hurt my lungs, I determined that I was as ready as Iâd ever be! I was ready to accept Jimâs challenge now, and give it my best shot! But inwardly I made a mental note that it had been years since I felt this much anticipation about anything! While I harbored a genuine fear of making a fool of myself out there in the Rink, the excitement of feeling like a child again won out hands down in that decision making process. With skates tightly secured on my feet, I rose to my feet a bit hesitantly attempting to familiarize myself with this new and unfamiliar experience. Flailing my arms in an attempt to gain my equilibrium, I must have resembled a young bird contemplating its first flight. Without much ado, Jim was by my side in an instant. He placed his left arm around my body steadying my balance. With his right hand he took my left hand in his. He moved with the grace of a synchronized clock to the sound of the music as it began to play and was released over the Rink Speakers.
