WAY 26 Dream yourself into sleep

Use self-hypnosis to train the mind to get off to sleep.

Sleeping is not about ‘switching off’ the brain, but rather, activating it in a different way. When we have difficulty in sleeping, it is often because we are disturbed by the external sounds and sensations and try to block them out. However, we can use the sounds and other features around us to encourage the natural ‘auto symbolic affect’. This occurs as our attention begins to turn inwards and sensory input from the outside starts getting altered into fragments of dreams. For example, the sound of a dripping tap might symbolically become a running stream, or the warmth of the bedclothes might become the feel of sunshine on a holiday beach. These visualisations help us to drift into trance or sleep.
