THE MOMENT I saw Richie get out of the Gus Bus, I leapt out of Princess.

“It’s here,” the boy said excitedly.

I looked around. All I saw was an overgrown lot at the end of the cul-de-sac. “You’re sure it’s here?”

He nodded excitedly and ran toward me and grabbed my hand. “Come on, Smoosher lady.”

Sol emerged from the green camper slowly. I glanced at him, trying not to look as worried as I felt. His shimmer was still almost invisible, and he looked physically weak. “I can handle this,” I told him. “Maybe you need to rest. Or maybe Marco can feed you.”

He shook his head. “I’m going with you.”

As Karen, Marco, Red, and Mildred joined us, I glanced around nervously, afraid that somebody would see the panther.

“This way.” Richie tugged me toward the copse of trees in the distance.

“Does anybody else have a bad feeling about this?” Karen asked.

Marco looped his arm through hers and told her reassuringly, “Don’t worry. Our group can handle anything.”

I rolled my eyes, thinking he had a very selective memory. As we moved through the trees, I heard whispering.

I stopped in my path, holding up my hand to halt the others. “Do you hear that?”

They all looked at me like I was nuts.

I focused on Mildred. Hopefully, cats had better hearing than humans. “What about you?”

“Nothing,” she replied on a deep purr.

“What do you hear?” Sol asked.

“It’s like whispering,” I said. “But I can’t make out what they’re saying.”

They all surveyed the area. Nobody could see anything.

“Just be on guard,” Sol warned, stepping up so that he was on the other side of Richie.

“We’re almost there,” Richie said.

Together, our group shuffled forward cautiously.

“Interesting,” Marco muttered.

I wanted to ask him what was interesting, but I heard more whispering. I still couldn’t find the source. It made me nervous. I began to mentally chant my name, summoning my power so that I’d be ready to defend the group from whatever was lurking. I considered throwing a shield over everyone, just to be safe.

Suddenly, I spotted something bright on the path ahead “What’s that?” I pointed in the object’s direction.

“Ooh,” Karen squealed in delight. “It’s a garden gnome. I love garden gnomes. They’re so cute!”

I frowned at the statue. Wearing sunglasses, he had his arms crossed over his chest and a scowl plastered over his white beard. He did not look cute. He looked pretty intimidating for something that barely came up to my knee.

“What’s a garden gnome doing in the middle of the woods?” I muttered, having a bad feeling about it as we advanced.

“Guarding the entrance!” the little bearded figure boomed.

Startled, we all stopped moving. Karen yelped. Marco held her steady.

“Hi,” Richie said, waving at the gnome. “I’m Richie. We just need to get the box that’s in there.”

The gnome, who wore a pointed hat that said SECURITY, stared up at us defiantly. “You will not pass.”

“But we need it,” Richie said. “It’s very important.”

“You shall not pass,” the gnome repeated, stamping his foot.

I looked over my shoulder at Marco, who was still holding on to Karen.
