If your gums are bleeding when you brush your teeth you may have gingivitis, which is perio in a mild stage. At this stage it can easily be treated and cured. All you may have to do is start brushing and flossing correctly. If you do not have a lot of tartar on your teeth, the bleeding should stop within a few weeks. If it doesn’t stop, see your dentist right away for an exam. It will likely be treatable with a cleaning by a hygienist.

If you do not treat the bleeding problem, it may get worse. Many people will slack off on their brushing and flossing because it hurts. Do not do If anything, increase the amount of care given to your gums. Instead of healing your problem, slacking off on home care will make your problem worse. I’m not trying to scare you, but if totally neglected, you risk developing moderate to severe periodontal disease and perhaps the condition called ANUG (Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis). Some of you know this condition by its old name “trench mouth.” This is a painful and destructive infection of the gums. It is also a condition which affects many young adults that are run down or under a lot of stress. Like advanced perio disease, this condition causes you to give off a foul odor from your mouth.
