BOLAN MADE READY to meet Gary Manning. It was 3:30 a.m., and they had a busy morning ahead of them. His head was still killing him. The bullet furrow in his arm ached with every move, but so far he felt no fever and the arm didn't look infected. He'd managed four hours of sleep. Upon awakening he'd found the uncontrollable tics and twitching from his repeated electrical shocks had subsided. He stared into the cracked and streaked bathroom mirror and saw a red-eyed punching bag staring back.

Bolan's phone rang, and he didn't recognize the number. "Hello?"

A woman's voice with a French accent answered. "Hello? Mr.... Cooper?"

"Who's speaking?"

"This is Inspector Faith Gelinas, RCMP."

Bolan considered hanging up. The RCMP was one of the most modern police forces in the world, and it was in their power to intercept and trace cell phone calls. "How did you get this number?"

The inspector sounded vaguely offended. "How do you think?"

"Antonetti."

"That's right."

Bolan checked his watch. "What can I do for you, Inspector?"

"Well, it's more a question of what I can do for you." "I thought my name was mud."

"Mud is an understatement. You are officially in a great deal of trouble, Mr. Cooper."

"So any assistance you can give me would be...unofficial?"

The inspector sighed. "Dani's a good friend of mine. We graduated cadet training together. I would have failed half of my exams without her help. I owe her a lot. She called me a few hours ago. She told me to...take care of you."

Bolan paused. It was nice to know he still had someone on his side. "Thanks."

"Yes, well. You made an impression, and you saved my best friend's life. Save this number. If you need something, or you're in real trouble, call me. I don't know what I can do for you. A get-out-of-jail-free card is above my pay grade, but if I can do something for you without jeopardizing my career, I will."

"I appreciate that, Inspector."

"Listen, Cooper. Officially? Your name is dogshit across the country. Unofficially? You've put some foot to ass on some real lowlifes, and you saved one of our own from a fate worse than death. You've got some people rooting for you."

"How's Dani holding up?"

"We talked for a while today. It could have been a lot worse, but she's a lot more traumatized by the ordeal than she'd like to admit. They're going to keep her for another day at the hospital. Then our people will probably want to give her a psychological evaluation."

"So she's off the case?"

"For the moment, pending doctor's clearance. Do me a favor. Don't call her. At least not while she's in the hospital. You'll just get her in trouble. You can send her messages through me until they release her."

"Will do. How's Dr. Ferentinos?"

"He's AWOL. He went home to clean up before being debriefed, only he never got there." Inspector Gelinas laughed suspiciously. "You're saying he's not with you?"

Bolan glanced at his watch again. Dr. Ferentinos wouldn't be arriving for another fifteen minutes. "Nope. Not with me.
