Marmite trademark number 249,997.

On 15 November 1902 the company applied to register its first trademark (number 249,997) for ‘a concentrated preparation, being an article of food’. Marmite was sold in small earthenware pots, of a type that was illustrated in the trademark and also appears on the glass jars used since the 1920s. The origin of the word Marmite is the cooking pot of the same name used in France.

The popularity of Marmite increased and in 1907 a new factory was opened at Camberwell Green in London. In the 1930s the Marmite company was acquired by Bovril, which was bought in 1971 by Cavenham. The brand eventually ended up with Unilever, which now holds many Marmite trademarks, including number 321,670 from 1910, which shows the identical pot of spread used in the first trademark but with the omission of the original company name. Sales of Marmite are now about £23 million every year.

McDougall’s Flour

Today, McDougall’s is a well-known brand of self-raising flour. (This is flour that contains baking soda and, usually, an acidic phosphate to enable dough and baked products to rise without yeast.) In 1879 McDougall Brothers applied for a trademark (number 20,826) for their self-raising flour, claiming the brand had been in use since before 1867. The brothers Alexander, Isaac, James Thomas, John and Arthur had all worked in the family business, a chemical works, since they were old enough to help, although the two eldest, Alexander and Isaac, had tried to run away to America to escape their kindly but autocratic father. This episode obliged their father to retire from the business and accept the sale of the firm to the sons for a sum of £36,000 over twelve years, later increased to £40,000 when they were late paying some of the instalments!
