Colonel Umar Abdalrahman sat in his cold, cramped office and waited anxiously for news that Rhatib had arrived safely in the country.
According to Abdalrahman's superiors, the plan was supposed to have been simple. Penetrate the American electronics defense systems using the FBI's packet snooper, Carnivore, as the communications pathway. While it sounded simple, that wasn't quite all there was to it. It had taken them many months to set it up. Were it not for the technical genius of Rhatib, they probably wouldn't have made it this far.
Sadiq Rhatib was Abdalrahman's only living relative besides his wife, and he loved that boy dearly. After his brother was lost defending Afghanistan against the alleged "freedom fighters" in the north, they were forced into hiding in the mountains. Abdalrahman swore he would defend his nation and preserve the life of his nephew to his dying breath. The enemy murdered Afghan women and children, assisted by an army of American infidels. They had pillaged and raped a great land, and destroyed the Taliban. Abdalrahman watched the American television news while U.S. armed forces bombed holes in his beautiful country, and then the gutless soldiers in the north followed and decimated everything left in the wake of the bombings.
It showed their spineless ways, and it demonstrated that there wasn't one member outside of the original group dedicated to the cause of al Qaeda who could be trusted. Even some of those within the group had betrayed the cause and the trust of the Taliban. There seemed this total lack of control and discipline on the part of some members once they got outside the sphere and influence of the fatwahs. Those declarations of war against the Americans were the fabric that held their brotherhood together, and Abdalrahman meant to keep it together.
It was all for the greater glory of Allah and the security of His nation.
The satellite telephone rang and shook Abdalrahman from his daydreaming. He snatched the oversized receiver as he cursed himself for succumbing to the thoughts of glory and victory. He was a serious soldier and a religious man. If he did not tolerate such activities from his men, he certainly could not tolerate them in himself.
"Yes?" he barked into the phone.
"We have received a message, sir."
Abdalrahman didn't have to ask from whom the message originated. Even through the crackling static he recognized the voice of his contact in Peshawar.
"Are they close?" he asked the caller.
"Yes, Colonel," the man replied. "They have advised that Americans are following them."
"Take care of it," Abdalrahman replied. "Understood?" "Understood, sir?'
Abdalrahman disconnected the call, then sat back in his chair and rubbed his eyes. He could not believe that Malik had allowed the Americans to follow them this far. He would have to give that man a good tongue-lashing when he returned. Of course, he would do it in the right place and the right time, without Rhatib or any of Malik's other men present. This was something between Abdalrahman and Malik, and not for the ears of anyone else.
