On Desire

Lucretius, On the Nature of Things

Lucretius’ epic poem On the Nature of Things is a vast and strange book, ranging through subjects such as earthquakes, metallurgy and the soul. If there is no afterlife, and no divine intervention, Lucretius suggests that the principal object of life is pleasure.

Just before this passage, Lucretius has been thinking about the imagination, and how it responds to the world when we sleep. Though others might think of dreams as prophecies, Lucretius thinks of them in a very modern way, as places to play, to explore, and to act out our desires. From here, he moves daringly into the subject of wet dreams, thinking about how the mind goes off in search of pleasure even when we are asleep. The language moves beautifully between the anatomical and the philosophical, giving a richness that draws out the mysteries of the body, of the mind, and of love.
