Powells Creek
The wetlands vegetation that marks the borders of the creek eventually gives way to hard, grassy banks, where a different variety of marsh vegetation from that of the wetlands is evident, including swamp iris and marsh mallows. The creek is still about 10 yards across here, and the water below is crystal clear and several feet deep.
In a few hundred yards, you will be paralleling two rows of high-voltage transmission lines before you bend left and cross under them. You can actually hear the crackling of the electricity coursing through the very thick wires. Here is where the creek becomes a little narrower, and gravel across the streambed marks the turnaround point. While it appears that the creek would end nearby, it actually continues for several more miles and drains a watershed of over 11,500 acres. Once you have retraced your route back to the protected bay, head right and skirt the far shore for additional wildlife-viewing opportunities (on our last paddle, we observed two bald eagles soaring and landing in nearby trees). Returning to the launch site from here is about a 3-mile paddle.
