IT WASN’T blue haze I was seeing. It was blue shimmer. And it was everywhere.

I half-stood as I summoned Richie to me. When our bodies collided, we crashed to the ground.

Clutching the boy to me, I shouted, “Shield!” just as a firebolt headed at us.

It bounced off the shield, splintering into a million sparks.

Still holding on to Richie, I saw that Sol had morphed into dragon form and was facing off against the approaching attackers. The female Culler, who’d dusted her friends, advanced, flanked by six other Cullers.

We were terribly outmatched. Ben was going to be proven right. We wouldn’t be able to save the boy.

“Richie!” Karen screamed, struggling to scramble toward us.

Her progress was impaired by Marco, who had wrestled her to the ground. He was right to not let her reach me. I couldn’t risk dropping the shield to let her reach her son.

Another thunderbolt shattered against the shield.

“Smoosher lady?” Richie’s small voice was laden with terror.

“It’s going to be okay,” I promised him.

Sol roared and exhaled a giant puff of flame at the Cullers. Ben, standing beside him, expanded the fire into a wall, slowing their progress.

“Do you still have Link?” I asked the kid.

“In my pocket.”

“Good. Take him out and put him on the ground.”

Even though I could feel him trembling, the boy did as I asked, even as another bolt exploded around us.

“Expand,” I ordered my hod.

The penny became a copper cauldron.

“How can I help?” Link asked.

“Where’s Valentina?” I panted.

“I don’t know,” the cauldron replied in his metallic voice.

“Shit!” I muttered.

“Swear jar,” Richie teased weakly.

I kissed his forehead. I loved this plucky, quirky kid.

“If they’re touching, you can pull Richie, his mom, and Marco in, and then reduce, right?” I asked the hod.

“Yes,” he replied confidently. “As long as one is in contact with me. But I can pull them in when I’m in coin form, too.”

I flinched as the shield was rocked by another blow. I didn’t know if they were getting stronger or I was getting weaker.

“Reduce,” I muttered, and then scooped up the penny.

I looked up to see that Ben and Sol were falling back. They were still battling, but the Cullers were advancing.

“Here’s the plan, kiddo,” I told Richie, pressing the coin into his hand. “Put this in your pocket.”

He took it and did as I said.

Meanwhile, I caught Marco’s eye and waved him toward me. Still holding on to Karen, he crawled toward us.

“When I say now, I want you to grab both your mom and Marco. Think you can do that?”

The boy nodded.

“You’re going to save them, Richie,” I whispered in his ear. “Just grab them as tight as you can.”

Marco and Karen were almost on top of us. I held up a hand to pause them. Marco understood and stopped, but Karen kept thrashing.

I watched Sol take a deep breath and waited for him to exhale his fireball at the Cullers.

The moment he did, I dropped the shield. “Now!” I shoved the boy off of me, launching him in the direction of Karen and Marco.
