Chapter Twelve

When we finished lunch, we headed to Reminisce Costumes to talk to Anita. How had we not known that William Wells was dipping his toes into the businesses of Pumpkin Hollow? Why hadn’t anyone said anything?

Christy turned to me when I parked in front of the costume shop. “There are people in this town who could have helped us put a stop to the amusement park, but they were more interested in advancing their own businesses rather than doing something that would benefit everyone.”

I sighed without looking at her. “I had the same thought. And now everyone’s angry about the loss of business that’s going to hit this town, but when they had the chance to put a stop to it, they didn’t do it.” I wasn’t blind, but I sure was disappointed. Maybe we couldn’t have stopped the construction of the amusement park, but if we had been informed, we might have made different decisions and known we did everything we could.

She shook her head. “Why did they act like they were just learning these things when we talked at the bakery?” Her voice sounded like she might cry, and I didn’t blame her. We were family here in Pumpkin Hollow, and some people hadn’t behaved that way.

“I don’t know. But we can’t act like we’re angry at them, or they won’t tell us as much. Let’s try to stay neutral.”

She sighed. “Okay. But when I tell Devon what’s been going on, he's going to be angry. Very angry.”

I nodded. “I know. But he needs to try not to let on that he is. At least for now.”

The prices amazed me more. She also had less expensive costumes, but it was the others that I was enthralled by. If Mr. Wells had purchased his costumes from her, she stood to make a lot of money.

Anita came out of the back carrying a hanger with a Little Bo Peep costume on it. She smiled. “Hey, Girls. How are you this afternoon?”

“We’re great,” I said. “That’s a cute costume.”

She nodded. “I bought one for myself. If I had a pet lamb, it would make the costume complete.” She chuckled.

“You have beautiful costumes here,” Christy said, looking around.

She nodded. “I can’t stop myself. Every time I see one of my suppliers has something new, I have to buy it. Thank goodness I have a website to help move things. Is Ethan close to finding Mr. Wells’ killer?”

I shook my head. “Not yet, but I’m sure he will soon. I still can’t get over what he wanted to do with the amusement park. Opening it up so tourists could go there and shop? It was brilliant, but it sure would have hurt a lot of the businesses around here.”

She nodded. “I know. My shop hasn’t
