Solar Module Roof Layout

The multilevel home has multiple roof areas resulting in solar modules being installed in five areas on the roof. This layout is shown in Figure 4. The areas are connected into 3 arrays or circuits.

How the System Works

Simplified—Solar energy (photons) are sensed by a set of 32 solar modules connected in 3 arrays to generate 6.4 kW of electrical power. Each solar module is connected to a microinverter to generate AC power for the local electrical grid. The idea is to use solar power to offset the electrical power consumption at the home. (See Figure 5)

Detailed— Solar energy (photons) from the sun bath the silicon cells in each solar module activating the crystals of silicon creating direct current (DC) electrical energy.

The voltage and current are sensed by a microinverter mounted on the roof adjacent to each solar module. The microinverter converts the DC voltage into an AC voltage providing AC current through an interconnect cable to an AC junction box and down the roof into the garage.
