10. Everybody is different, and that’s OK
When you work with other people, personalities clash. Some people just don’t mix. You can’t be friends with everybody, and that’s OK. You need not be as long as you can work with each other and have respect for each other.
And if things escalate, which they sometimes do, be the better person. Turn the other cheek and don’t worry about it. It’s pointless to spend energy on negativity and people whom you don’t like.
11. Don’t let the small things fester
You spend lots of time with your team – maybe even more time than with your spouse or kids. During this time, annoyances will come up. Maybe your teammate is chewing loudly at her desk, or never closes the door, or you might be annoyed because she’s always going home early.
As in any relationship, little annoyances grow over time until they explode into something more serious.
Address your annoyances by telling the other person how you feel when they leave the door open or chew loudly. They probably don’t even realize that they do it and will be mindful next time.
12. Celebrate success
When some teams finish an iteration of work, they immediately move on to the next iteration without a break. That’s no fun and burns people out.
I used to work on a team in which we went out for lunch (which is a rare thing in the Netherlands) every time we finished an iteration and deployed the features. It always was a great time and something to look forward to, and it brought the team closer together.
When your team achieves something, like finishing a successful iteration, you should celebrate. Take a moment to congratulate each other on the great work that everybody has put in. Take some time to appreciate the result. Take a break for an hour or so between iterations.
