Bogdan Petrovic stared out across the vast city before him and wondered when he would ever start to enjoy living here. From this vantage point, high up on the 22nd floor of the office in Central London, he could see several iconic landmarks that had helped to make London famous around the world. Big Ben, the most recognisable clock face on the planet, standing tall and proud above the Houses of Parliament. Not far from there was the London Eye, the ghost-white wheel that gave hundreds of tourists a unique view of the city every day. And in the distance was The Shard, that metal megalith that seemed to be almost touching the heavens, looking particularly stunning today as it shimmered and glistened in the early morning sunlight. They were all things that had helped put London on the map, alongside double-decker buses, black cabs and the Royal Family waving from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. They were also the same things that Bogdan had included in his fantasies of living in this city, when he had been back home in Serbia dreaming of a new life overseas.

Of course, the line between fantasy and reality was a harsh one. In fact, it could be better described as less of a line and more of a canyon and Bogdan wouldn’t have argued with that depiction. Yes, he was here now, physically standing in the city he had wanted to be in. But all that other stuff he had dreamt about hadn’t quite materialised yet. The lazy walks by the Thames, the large pub meals washed down by multiple pints of high strength lager or even just the experience of having his own home to unwind in. He was still no nearer to any of it.

Worst of all, he worried that if things carried on as they did, he would never get to have them.

He forced himself away from the seductive view and back to the thing he should have been focusing on instead. It was the coffee-stained, sauce-covered table that was part of the canteen used by the employees of Miller Marketers, a trendy advertising company based in Oxford Circus. The people who worked here were some of the most talented creatives in the country, all pulling down high salaries in return for their in-demand work producing advertising copy for large businesses around the world. Not that you would think it by looking at the state of their kitchen.

It looked more like the habitat of a bunch of feral children rather than a group of business professionals.

Bogdan had been tidying up after these people for several months now and it never seemed to make much difference. Each morning that he arrived here saw him met with the same tsunami of mess as had greeted him the previous day. No matter how hard he scrubbed, polished and mopped, the place would be a bombsite again by the time the people who worked here had finished putting their imprint on it that day.
