Bailey decided there was no way she was going to make a big, fancy breakfast, not when she had to prepare a ham dinner.

She poured Wheaties into two bowls and topped each with sliced bananas. By the time she got the coffee brewing, Bobby dragged himself into the kitchen with a yawn.

His tousled hair and stubbly cheeks were a far cry from the Bobby she was accustomed to seeing in the morning. His shirt and tie had been replaced by pajamas, a robe, and slippers, but she decided she liked seeing him like this more.

“Morning, honey.” He leaned over to kiss her before taking his seat at the table.

“Morning. Did you sleep well?”

“I did.” He poured milk onto his cereal, and she placed his coffee in front of him. “How about you?” he asked.

She shrugged. “I think I’m a little nervous about today. Maybe I should have cancelled my hair appointment.”

“Bae, don’t stress yourself. While you’re at the beauty shop, I’m going to mow our lawn and head over to Mom’s to do some chores for her. It’s going to take all day. You know how Mom is.”

No. She didn’t. And that was the problem. But everything was ready to be tossed in the oven. She had even put the pineapple and cloves on the ham.

She inhaled deeply. “It’s going to go well…”

“It will.”

She sat and poured milk on her cereal and ate quickly so she had time to look presentable at Juanita’s. The last time she was there, the ladies had been very fashionable, and she refused to look as if she didn’t know what she was doing.

She put on a slimming dress with a matching jacket and while she worked on her makeup, Bobby came into the room and stripped out of his pajama bottoms right in front of the camera.

He was wearing boxers, but it seemed a bit risky. He then pulled on navy slacks and a sweater.

“Let me shave real quick and we can go.”

“Okay, honey.”

He paused on his way to the bathroom.

“You look beautiful.”

She smiled. “Thanks.”

“Don’t be nervous. There’s no reason to. We’re family.”

“I know, but this is my first time preparing a dinner for someone, and I just want everything to be perfect.”

He kissed her forehead and went into the bathroom.

An hour later, he dropped her off in front of Juanita’s.

“Don’t worry about picking me up. I’ll see if Pat can take me home or I’ll catch the bus.”

“Are you sure? I don’t mind coming to get you.”

“No, because you’ll just have to go back to your mom’s. I’ll be okay. If I had thought about it, I would have asked Pat to pick me up on her way here this morning.”

“Okay. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

As soon as she entered the salon, she was met with the fast-paced music of Little Richard—or someone that sounded just like him.

All the regulars were present and they greeted her as if they were old friends.

Juanita, tall and exotic, was dressed in a bright-orange pencil skirt, a pretty floral blouse…with sneakers on her feet.
