"Did you see the look on Vandettin's face when I squeezed the trigger?" Dora asked no one in particular.

Nain spoke sarcastically from the back seat. "Yes, I saw it. Terrorizing that old man certainly proved how brave you are."

Dora twisted, hatred flaring briefly in his narrowed eyes. He glanced at the AK-47 in Nain's lap and scowled. "Your insult is uncalled for, brother. I've proved my bravery time and again."

"I don't dispute that. But there was no need for you to play with Vandettin as you did. Moving your Uzi back and forth in front of his eyes while he begged for his life was unnecessarily cruel. You've changed a lot in the past two years, Muzo."

"Have I?"

Nain nodded and gazed out the window at the scenery streaking past. "In the old days you would have shot him and been done with it. Now you seem to take an excessive delight in tormenting those you terminate."

"I wouldn't describe impressing on him the error of his ways as cruel," Dora stated stiffly. "You tend to exaggerate sometimes."

"I'd rather be safe than sorry," Nain said. "We have to go through Salihli and Turgutlu before we reach Izmir. Perhaps it would be wise to bypass both towns. We'll lose a little time, but what is time compared to the possibility of losing our lives?"

Dora looked at him. "I'm not the only one who has changed. You weren't so concerned about dying when we began our campaign."

"I've learned a few things since our college days. One of them is that life is precious and sweet. I look forward to spending my later years in a small house overlooking the Aegean or the Mediterranean."

"You're quite the dreamer. That's part of your problem."

Nain faced forward. "I wasn't aware I had a problem."

"Just a figure of speech. I just meant that out of all of us, you have the greatest imagination. You envision things we would never dream of."

They continued for a while in silence.

"I just hope I can make it safely out of the country to Europe before all hell breaks loose," Nain remarked. "The government undoubtedly will intensify its efforts to apprehend us after tonight."

"So?" Dora said contemptuously. "They haven't caught us yet, and they never will. We always manage to stay one step ahead of the incompetent fools."

"Everyone's luck runs out sooner or later."

"Is that a fact? You're beginning to depress me with your dismal attitude. Unless you have something constructive to say, do me a favor and keep quiet until we get to Izmir."

"I'll talk when I damn well feel like it," Nain snarled, placing his right hand on the AK-47. "You're not our lord and master, despite what you apparently think."

"I never claimed to be," Dora stated. "But I have managed to keep all of us from rotting in prison, haven't I?"

Nain's features had hardened. "You make it sound as if you do all the planning and the work," he told Dora. "We contribute to the cause just as much as you do.
